6 Rules for Accessorizing Your Wedding Dress

Like Chanel and Cara Delevingne, some things are meant to be together. Wedding accessories are one of these bonds, a beautiful duo, standing as the second most important part of your bridal look—so yes, it’s very important. Yet, there are classic rules to play in the game of great accessorizing, ensuring that you don’t go overboard with glitz, while also not being too plain jane. To guide your accessory quest, follow these 6 rules for accessorizing your wedding dress.

“Fashion is architecture, it’s a matter of proportions.”  Coco Chanel

 1.) Balance:

‚ÄčYour accessories should not be the centerpiece, but rather the décor. Essentially, the pieces you choose should complement the flow and style of your dress without creating too much weight. For instance, if your dress is intensely dramatic and bedazzled, you should stick with delicate pieces, but if your dress is slim and understated, you can wear chunky statement jewelry.

“Elegance is not about being noticed, it’s about being remembered.” Giorgio Armani

 2.) A Photogenic Look:

Unless you’re a full-time supermodel, your wedding day is the time you’ll be photographed more than you have in your entire life.  To complement the camera, you’ll need to choose accessories that work well in the photos. Certain colors and textures may clash more in photos than to the naked eye, so do a test run of your entire look in the wedding hall, considering lighting, as well as every angle.

Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory,” Coco Chanel

3.) Comfort:

As much as you’d love to shine bright all night, you also need to consider your comfort level—at least to a practical degree. Think about how you’ll be on your feet, in heels, all day, and throughout the reception. So if you’re going to pull out all the bridezilla stops, including painful shoes, a push up bra, double spanx, hair extensions and bulky accessories—the accessories may be more glamorous in your head than in real life. If you want to truly enjoy the night with ease, treat comfort with importance.

“Fashion is over quickly, style is forever” Ralph Lauren

4.) Keep it Classy:

Although you should certainly consider modern trends, it's best not to go overboard with new bridal gimmicks. Styles like the vine headband or feather earrings may seem like a good idea to a fashionista in the moment, but you may not feel the same when looking back. It’s that same feeling you get when observing your old high school photos, questioning your tacky self-tanner and belly ring. To avoid such disappointing memories, choose accessories that are timeless and less trendy.

“Playing dress up begins at age 5 and never truly ends”  Kate Spade

5.) Prepare in Advance:

It goes without saying that your bridal look is not something to leave to the last minute. Arrange your makeup and hair stylists in advance, allowing you to choose your matching accessories and bring the entire look together. Many brides treat their hair, makeup and accessories as separate concerns, which can interrupt the harmony of your ensemble. Prepare every detail in advance, even if you are a hopeless procrastinator.

“Fashion is about something that comes from within you” Ralph Lauren

6.) Have The Final Say:

You’ve had parents, future inlaws, pushy bridesmaids and even nosey strangers give you advice on everything from the cake, to the decor of your wedding, to whom to include on the guestlist. While it's great (sometimes) to be offered input from those trying to help, the final say on your bridal look should adhere to your personal style not your mother in laws, or anyone else. Because it truly is your day, don’t second guess your ideas.

The Bling and The Bling-less

Taking a look at the Good and Ugly World of Celebrity Engagement Rings.

Ring

Just because they spend the dollars, doesn’t mean that it’s on point. The engagement ring game is a competitive one in Hollywood as the gentlemen all want to out-bling their Hollywood counterparts.  We look at the best and worst rings sported on the most glamorous A list ladies in the biz.

Thumbs up: Simplicity works

Julia Stiles

Keep it simple, right? Not in Hollywood, but in the case of Julia Stiles, we stand corrected. This is why the simplicity of Julia Stiles’ ring makes it a big thumbs-up. The “Ten Things I Hate About You” starlet, hasn’t been able to take her eyes off of her cameraman beau, Preston Cook. The two announced their engagement early in 2016; Cook proposed on Christmas Eve and presented Stiles with a stunning and modest sign of his love.

The couple went sweet and simple with a diamond on a rose gold band with a bezel setting. Elegant. No fuss. And what’s really important, is that Stiles loved it. “Best Christmas Ever” she captioned the shot of the ring on her Instagram.

Thumbs up: Perfection is possible

Rosie Huntington-Whitley

Who can say no to Jason Statham, the smooth-talking action movie star? He sealed the deal with his long-time girlfriend, Rosie Huntington-Whitley, former Victoria Secret Model this past summer 2016.

The ring features a round, early 20th century flawless diamond. It’s classic and elegant and the stone is out of a fairy tale. According to PEOPLE, Jason wanted something perfect and flawless and he kept coming back to this one. He knew it was the one.

Thumbs up: Big, bold and beautiful

Ciara Wilson

This songstress flaunted her show-stopping rock after her beau, Russell Wilson proposed during a romantic tropical vacation. "She said Yes!!! Since Day 1 knew you were the one. No Greater feeling… #TrueLove," Wilson, 27, wrote on his Instagram video.

 Ciara Wilson

The ring is a vision of beauty, featuring a 16-carat diamond and surrounding stones. In Ciara’s case, bigger is better.

Fail: Bad romance… and ring

Lady Gaga

They might be a girl’s best friend, but even diamonds can overstay their welcome. Just like those creepy Instagrammers who keep liking your photos, some forms of flattery just need to go! Gaga’s heart shaped diamond is one of those must-ditch things. It has cheese written all over it, reminding us of those embarrassing days of kiddy makeup kits and jelly sandals… basically, this ring falls under the category of things better left in the past.

 Lady Gaga

On the flip side, Gaga got rid of the ring and the guy. She since split from Taylor Kinney and is now rumored to be dating Goodfella, Ray Liotta.

Fail: The little rock in the sea

Alyson Hannigan

In the real world, this ring’s not too shabby, but according to Hollywood standards, Alyson’s ring is teeny weeny. The two neighboring diamonds along the band compete in size with the main rock, making it a small tale to tell.

Alyson Hannigan

It’s a story that says the couple’s romance and their obvious devotion to each other is much more important to them than some sparkly jewelry, clearly. And while that’s wonderfully adorable, it makes us press the snooze button on our buzzfeed of coolest celebrity couples.

     1.Trista’s Statement Necklace

A statement necklace is a show-stopping way to give that extra sparkle to your bridal look. Trista nails this trend with her chunky diamond necklace, adding dimension to her elegant yet simple wedding dress. It also makes a tasteful centerpiece for her décolleté! So, when in doubt, blind them with diamonds, keeping all the attention on you.

Just make sure your dress is strapless if you’re going to wear heavier jewelry to keep the outfit balanced. It’s perfectly befitting if you’re the type of bride who demands, “all eyes on me!”—truly, a statement necklace is what you’re after. Clearly, Trista knows what’s up.

     2. Catherine’s Earrings

Whoever said less is more was definitely not a bride. Catherine slammed this saying shut when she wowed us with a stunning pair of drop pearl earrings. Combining classic taste and sensuality, she truly epitomizes the fun of being a bride.

If you’d like to rock these type of earrings, you’ll need to make sure your dress style is the right shape. These earrings typically go with simpler dresses like a mermaid cut or swan

     3. Molly’s matching bracelets and barrettes

For brides who love glitter, sparkle and the whole shebang, take some cues from Molly. Her silver bracelet compliments her barrettes in a beautiful updo, teaching us that it’s never faux pas to be matchy matchy with your accessories.

Ultimately, it’s your day, so you get a free pass to do whatever you want— without dipping into wacko bride territory… okay, maybe just a bit.

     4. Ashley’s veil

The veil is one of the most underrated bridal accessories, yet still among the most important. Ashley shows us the allure of going for a shorter design, accentuating her dress, which pours dramatically over the ground. The trim on the veil is jazzed up with some sparkle, preventing the look from being too plain.

The shorter veil design works well particularly for petite women. It gives you the illusion of height without having to clunk on sky-high heels (even though you’re probably dying to wear a pair of bridal Christian Louboutins)—now pause to fantasize…

     5. Becca’s headpiece

With a touch of hippie flair, Becca pays tribute to the flower-weaved halo. It brilliantly adds a pop of color to her dress, while capturing Becca’s lively personality. Ultimately, her innovative choice shows that accessorizing should play up your personality, celebrating the true you both inside and out.

Becca coordinates her headpiece with her bouquet, unifying the entire look together. It makes the ideal picturesque outfit for a summertime wedding.

All these memorable bridal moments offer so many must-have ideas. What are your favorite accessories from the Bachelor?

Let us know ladies.

Ring Styles for your Personality

So, your significant other listened to Beyoncé, and wants to put a ring on it?  Congrats!  But, are you now a little overwhelmed by the mission to find just THE perfect engagement ring?  Does it seem like Mission Impossible with so many options out there?  Well, the best strategy is just to relax and let your instincts (and maybe also your budget?) guide you.  Because ultimately, choosing the right engagement ring is pretty much an instinctive thing – you will likely be naturally drawn to designs that reflect your personality and taste, and you will know which ring should adorn your finger the minute you spot it.  It will be one of those Oprah’s “Aha” moments!

Practical

If you’re someone who chooses function over fashion, consider a solitaire set. With its classic simplicity, this setting evokes a subtle beauty—perfect for ladies who prefer taking a quieter approach to being fabulous. And best of all, it can easily match with your other jewelry pieces, making the art of coordination a delightful no-brainer.

Trendy

If you’re a diva who likes to stand out from the crowd, there are plenty of contemporary designs available. Halo settings, where your stone is encased by a heavenly pillow of small diamonds, is hugely popular. You could also explore the different shapes of stones available, from circular to marquise.

If you’re still not sure, you can add some oomph with a mixed metal band, or a pop of color such as rose gold. Who says engagement rings can’t make a statement?

Classy

Maybe you’re the traditional type? In that case, you’ll adore all things antique. Get the classic look with a gorgeous vintage inspired engagement ring, featuring rose and white gold. Elegantly complimenting your freshly polished manicure and designer clutch, you’ll be thinking, “I’m so fancy. You already know!” while sipping on your low-fat latte and reapplying your rouge lipstick.

Style 29707

Glitzy

For the foot-stomping bridezilla, glitz is the way to go! Jam-packed with high-quality diamonds, sapphires and a fat rock, you’ll join the exclusive club of A-list engagement rings.  While inexpensive (and totally brag-worthy), you can treat your finger like royalty, giving her a crown fit for Kate Middleton herself.

You can wear it alone as a stunning statement piece or go wild by matching it with other jewelry. Go bling or go home!

Style 28172

Bohemian

If you’re a bohemian or a romantic soul, you’re best to simply follow your heart. Ignore the trends, the hype and the pressure to be fashionable and choose a ring that genuinely speaks to you. It could be unique, quirky or vintage— walk your own line when it comes to finding the perfect design. This way, whatever you choose will make a natural accompaniment to your carefree style, whether you’re a guitar player, hemp wearer or completely addicted to sriracha.

Style 29794

There are, of course, a few other styles betwixt and between those mentioned here.  But the point is, to think about and settle on a handful of descriptors that feel true to your personality and style before you embark on your engagement ring quest.  And once you’ve armed yourself with this critical criteria, it shouldn’t be too long before you’ll be waving your left hand in front of your friends to the tune of their sincere “Ahhs” and “Wows”!
